How many years of career do you need for the minimum pension?
You need at least 30 years of career, two thirds of a full 45-year career. Below that threshold there is no minimum pension at all: the pension is calculated solely on declared professional income, which often gives a very low amount for a self-employed person.
The threshold is not limited to your years as a self-employed person. The NISSE (National Institute for the Social Security of the Self-employed, INASTI/RSVZ) adds together your career as a self-employed person or helper, your career as an employee and any career completed abroad. A self-employed person who started out as an employee can therefore reach 30 years without having spent three decades in the status. The statutory pension calculation explains how each year is valued.
What is the effective work condition added in 2025?
For pensions starting on or after 1 January 2025, a 30-year career is no longer enough: you also need a minimum amount of work actually performed. For a career spent entirely as a self-employed person, that minimum is 64 quarters of effective work, or 16 years.
For a mixed career, the rule is expressed in days: 5,000 days full-time or 3,120 days part-time over the whole career, according to the Federal Pension Service. Some assimilated periods, such as quarters spent caring for a loved one, count as effective work.
The condition targets careers made up largely of assimilated periods: unemployment, long-term illness, breaks. A self-employed person who has paid contributions without interruption is not affected in practice.
- Born before 1963: only the 30-year career is required.
- Born in 1963 or later, without 30 years of career on 1 January 2025: the requirement rises according to year of birth.
- Born in 1970 or later: the condition applies in full.
How much do you receive with an incomplete career?
The full amount is only paid after 45 years of career. Between 30 and 45 years, the NISSE takes the minimum pension for a full career and multiplies it by the fraction of your self-employed career: 30/45, 36/45, and so on. So the guarantee protects a floor, not a fixed amount.
This is the most widespread misunderstanding. The figure of €1,844.93 goes around as "the minimum pension", whereas a single self-employed person who stops after a 30-year career receives €1,229.95 a month. The minimum pension does not replace savings: it underlines the need for them.

What pitfalls can deprive a self-employed person of the minimum pension?
Three situations come up again and again: a career just above 30 years but with too many assimilated periods, a mixed career that triggers a ceiling, and years of contribution exemption. Each can be checked on mypension.be well before your departure date.
- Mixed career: the Belgian employee pension plus the self-employed minimum pension may not exceed a ceiling. Above it, the self-employed minimum pension is reduced by the excess.
- Covid exemptions: contribution exemptions granted between 1 January 2020 and 31 March 2022 count towards the 30-year condition, but do not increase the amount.
- Ordinary exemptions: a contribution exemption leaves a gap in your career, unless it is regularised later. Before applying for one, weigh up its effect on the years that count.
How do you check your entitlement and plan ahead?
Look at your career overview on mypension.be, using your electronic identity card or itsme. It shows the years that count and an estimate of your pension. If you are unsure about a quarter, your social insurance fund can correct or explain the entry.
The reform coming into force on 1 January 2027 also changes the career conditions for early retirement and introduces a penalty (malus): see our article on the 2027 pension reform. An incomplete career can also gain in amount by buying back study years. To build the top-up that the minimum pension will not provide, the PLCI/VAPZ (free supplementary pension for the self-employed) remains the first lever, and the PLCI simulator works out its tax advantage.

Frequently asked questions
At least 30 years of career, two thirds of a full 45-year career. Years as an employee and your career abroad count towards that threshold. For pensions starting from 2025, you must also show a minimum amount of effective work.
After a full 45-year career, €1,844.93 gross a month for a single person and €2,305.44 at the household rate, amounts as at 1 March 2026. With a shorter career, the amount is reduced pro rata: €1,229.95 a month for a single person with a 30-year career.
Since 1 January 2025, a self-employed person whose whole career was self-employed must prove 64 quarters of work actually performed, or 16 years, on top of the 30 years of career. It applies in full to people born in 1970 or later, and gradually to those born in 1963 or later.
No. Below 30 years of career, across all schemes, no minimum pension is granted: the pension is calculated solely on professional income. If you have also worked as an employee or abroad, those years are added together and may take you over the threshold.
An ordinary exemption leaves a gap in your career, unless it is regularised later. Exemptions granted during the coronavirus crisis, between 1 January 2020 and 31 March 2022, are the exception: they count towards the 30-year condition, but do not increase the amount of the pension.
Yes, but the Belgian employee pension plus the self-employed minimum pension may not exceed a ceiling. If it is exceeded, the self-employed minimum pension is reduced by the excess. A mixed career therefore has to be checked as a whole, on mypension.be or with the Federal Pension Service.
